May promises 'maximum possible access' to single market

May promises 'maximum possible access' to single market

The governing Conservative Party is split over the terms Britain should seek to obtain in its exit negotiations, and Wednesday Labour will seek to exploit this with a parliamentary motion calling for a "full and transparent debate" allowing the Commons to "properly scrutinize" the government's position before it triggers Article 50.

The British currency is particularly sensitive to any suggestion that the country might be heading towards a "hard Brexit", or a clean break from the EU's single market of 500 million consumers in order to control immigration.

May said a two-year period of exit negotiations with European officials would begin once the United Kingdom invokes Article 50 to leave the 28-country bloc.

On the contrary, it is simply to ensure that we get the best possible deal for Britain, and one which reflects all the views of the communities that we as members of parliament represent'.

A London court this week will rule whether May can trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, which starts an exit, without approval from her fellow lawmakers.

May accepted the motion with conditions via an amendment, under her name, posted on the parliament website.

Keir Starmer, Labour's spokesman on leaving the European Union, said the opposition party had argued that parliament should have a say on the basic terms of the Brexit negotiations before Article 50 is triggered, not to frustrate the referendum result but to ensure that there is rigor and accountability on the vital issue.

Keir Starmer, Labour's Brexit spokesman, welcomed May's change of position but said it was not enough.

The announcement came as a surprise for many and was criticised for not having been worked on in collaboration with the provinces. Premier Brad Wall maintains that will cost the average Saskatchewan family an extra $1250 in annual taxes.

The party has also given the government 170 questions on the detail of the Brexit plan - one for every day until the end of March, the deadline May has set for triggering Article 50.

"The Government is focused on delivering on Brexit", the source said.

Nick Clegg tore into Conservative Brexiteers on Wednesday, accusing them of lacking "courage" and abandoning their previous commitment to parliamentary democracy. On Tuesday leaked government papers revealed that the Treasury would stand to lose £66bn a year in lost tax revenue after 15 years if the country opted for a hard Brexit, and GDP would fall by about 9.5%, compared if the country stayed in the EU. However, her spokesperson said Wednesday morning there would be no vote on the issue, Reuters reported.

But the Prime Minister stressed the 23 June vote also meant "we should control the movement of people from the European Union into the UK".
