Germany: Syrian bomb suspect had security check last year

The overnight arrest of Jaber Albakr ended a almost two-day nationwide search for the 22-year-old that German authorities launched after finding several pounds of explosives and components hidden inside an apartment in the eastern city of Chemnitz on Saturday.

A Syrian migrant suspected of planning a bomb attack on a Berlin airport has committed suicide in his prison cell in Leipzig, Germany.

De Maiziere said the Syrian captors' "behavior deserves praise and recognition".

He was handed over to police by three other Syrians who recognised him from photos released as part of a nationwide manhunt.

German police notified the public that they were looking for Albakr - a Syrian who had been granted entry into Germany in 2015 - on Saturday for amassing explosives in his apartment in the eastern town of Chemnitz.

"He resisted a little bit, he didn't want to be tied up and then he said, 'I will give you money, don't turn me in".

Federal prosecutors said they now have no indications that Albakr had already chosen a target for an attack.

Criminal police chief Michaelis said that, at this stage of the investigation, "the behaviour and actions of the suspect now speak for an IS context". The official wasn't authorized to discuss the investigation publicly and so spoke on condition of anonymity.

Man says his Samsung Galaxy Note 7 replacement blew up on plane
The Galaxy Note 7, which sells for $850 to $890, competes in the high-end smartphone business with Apple and its new iPhone 7. Southwest in a statement said the flight was evacuated after a customer reported smoke from a Samsung device.

He was carrying a backpack at the time and police feared he might have a bomb with him.

Germany's domestic intelligence chief Hans-Georg Maassen said his service had received information that Albakr "initially wanted to target trains in Germany before finally deciding on one of Berlin's airports".

Police arrested Syrian national Jaber Albakr on Monday after a massive manhunt lasting nearly two days.

He was identified only as Khalil A.in keeping with German privacy laws. Known as TATP, or triacetone triperoxide, it is fairly easy to make and detonate, police said.

According to German Minister of the Interior, Thomas de Maizière, parallels can be drawn between the incident in Leipzig and the deadly attacks in France and Belgium.

A bomb squad destroyed the explosives Saturday in a pit outside the five-story apartment building because they were considered too risky to transport.

Three Americans who helped thwart a terror attack on a train in France previous year were also awarded the Legion of Honour, the country's highest decoration. In July, several people were wounded in two attacks carried out by asylum seekers and claimed by ISIL.
