Long Island train derailment: 33 injured, services suspended

Long Island train derailment: 33 injured, services suspended

The derailment happened just over a week after a commuter train crashed into the terminal in Hoboken, New Jersey, killing one person and injuring more than 100.

Transit officials in NY are warning commuters to be prepared for delays and increased crowding Monday morning following a weekend train derailment on Long Island.

The collision, of a maintenance train and a commuter train as they traveled eastbound, sheared chunks off the commuter train cars, several of which derailed just east of New Hyde Park station in Nassau County.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said the trains "side-swiped" one another when the maintenance train somehow ended up alongside the commuter train.

Four people sustained serious injuries in the Saturday collision, including one passenger with multiple broken bones and a worker who suffered cuts, Metropolitan Transit Authority Chairman Thomas Prendergast said.

Google, Salesforce said to be among companies interested in buying Twitter
Attempts to make changes to its interface that might facilitate this have met with fierce resistance from users. As of this writing, Twitter is trading at $22.67 per pop, an increase of 21.66% from the day's start.

Federal investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board were to determine what exactly caused the accident, Cuomo said. That allowed limited train service to resume in time for Monday morning's rush hour on the Port Jefferson, Ronkonkoma and Oyster Bay Branches. "The two trains made contact at a switch near the New Hyde Park Station".

Officials were working to remove the trains from the tracks so that other trains can run Monday.

Train service has been suspended in both directions and Monday's commute is expected to be affected.

People riding on the train told local media they saw sparks or fire outside the windows after the train, which had been moving at normal speed, began shaking mildly, then more violently before striking something and coming to a halt. There were 14 LIRR morning rush hour westbound trains canceled Monday.
