Streets Blocked After Alfred Olango Shooting Video Released

The San Diego suburb had seen unruly and, at times, violent protests for the last two days.

A second officer who appears in the final seconds of the video fired a stun gun simultaneously.

He also released several more images of the vaping device investigators believe Olango was holding and showed an example of a similar item.

Olango's family called for the release of the video, but the chief said they declined to view it before the news conference.

There were fears of unrest after protesters threw bottles and a brick at police and had to be broken up with pepper-spray balls on Thursday night.

The event comes a day after two videos of the shooting were released by authorities, something Olango's family and community leaders had urged.

"We want to move forward in peace", community leader, Gerald Brown, said.

But his mother said he was having a mental breakdown and needed help.

An attorney for the family, Dan Gilleon, said on Friday that the newly released footage supported their position that the officers had "provoked a mentally disturbed person".

In a statement, police officials said two officers had responded to reports of a man walking in traffic.

Multiple killings of black people by armed police have sparked protests in cities across the USA in recent months.

Mr Davis defended the release and said it was meant to de-escalate tensions and correct what he felt was a "false narrative" that was developing.

On Friday night, about 200 protesters held a peaceful demonstration, marching and chanting "no justice, no peace", near the scene of the shooting.

The head of the San Diego NAACP is applauding the public release of videos showing a police officer police shooting an unarmed black man.

Mr Olango, his right hand in his trouser pocket, moved side to side and backed up towards a white pick-up truck.

Olango then bent over and assumed the shooting stance and Gonsalves quickly fired four shots at close-range. A woman shrieks loudly.

- Olango bends over and then raises his hands in front of him to chest level.

Davis defended the release and said it was meant to de-escalate tensions and correct what he felt was a "false narrative" that was developing.

"Full disclosure to the public builds trust, and it demonstrates respect", Branch said.

The Rev Shane Harris of the civil rights organisation National Action Network said the low-quality videos, shot at a distance, did not clarify what led to the shooting and warned that they are likely to make people angrier.
