US President Barack Obama has announced a pledge by 50 nations to take in 360,000 refugees from war-torn countries this year.
"And if we were to turn refugees away simply due to their background or religion, or, for example, because they are Muslim, then we would be reinforcing terrorist propaganda that nations like my own are somehow opposed to Islam, which is an ugly lie that must be rejected in all of our countries by upholding the values of pluralism and diversity", he said at the summit attended by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Bangladesh Prime Minsiter Sheikh Hasina.
Sharif shot back that Pakistan has suffered from spillover of Afghanistan's internal conflicts for more than three decades and "progress will be assured only when the Afghan parties themselves conclude that there is no military solution to the Afghan war".
At the heart of that approach, Mr Obama said, was the notion that the biggest conflicts were best solved when nations cooperated rather than tackling them individually.
"I called this summit because this crisis is one of the most urgent tasks for our time, our capacity for collective action", the USA leader said in his final address to the UN General Assembly.
