WashPost: Trump Used Foundation Money to Settle Legal Scores

Hillary Clinton's team had some harsh words for Donald Trump following a Washington Post report Tuesday that found he had used $258,000 from his charity to settle legal disputes over his businesses.

The Post reports that in 2007, Trump used his foundation's money when his Palm Beach, Florida, club was fined $120,000 by the town for having a flagpole that was nearly twice the height allowed under local rules.

To settle the case, the city government agreed to forgive the fine if the club donated $100,000 to a particular charity for former veterans.

The cases involved a combined $258,000 paid out by the Donald J. Trump Foundation - a charity nearly entirely funded with other people's money, the newspaper said - and follow a review of legal documents and the foundation's tax records. After The Post described the details of these Trump Foundation gifts, Tenenbaum described them as "really shocking".

In other cases, Trump's foundation sent checks to purchase portraits of himself, to buy advertisements for his hotel chain, and a football autographed by quarterback Tim Tebow.

Nevertheless, UKIP remains a potent force in British politics. "That's what independence means" she warned "Remainiacs". ITV News reported that his slot had been given to his arch-rival Nathan Gill, the party's overall leader in Wales.

For as much criticism as Donald Trump receives these days, his charitable nonprofit group - the Donald J. Trump Foundation - garners even more.

But, as Fahrenthold writes, "Trump's campaign has not responded to questions about what became of the helmet or the portrait". Trump hasn't donated to the charity since 2008, according to The Post, which also reported that it has been dealing only with other people's cash. The Trump Foundation made a $158,000 donation, the Post found.

The foundation is under investigation by the New York Attorney General's office over a payment made to a political group associated with Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, who is a Trump supporter and spoke at the Republican National Convention. The lawsuit was filed after a man, Martin Greenberg, hit a hole-in-one on the 13th hole at Trump's Westchester, New York golf course during a charity tournament, briefly winning $1 million, which was taken away after it was revealed that the shot did not travel a required 150 yards.

If the Internal Revenue Service were to find that Trump violated self-dealing rules, the agency could require him to pay penalty taxes or to reimburse the foundation for all the money it spent on his behalf. "It's past time for him to release his tax returns to show whether his tax issues extend to his own personal finances", she said.

Trump -on two separate occasions - used charity money to buy paintings of himself.
