President Barack Obama makes his case for self-driving cars

The DOT's comprehensive policy overview on self-driving cars, released Tuesday, presents safety guidelines for self-driving auto manufacturers - from data recording to crashworthiness and cybersecurity - in addition to distinguishing what federal and state government responsibilities are and outlining the existing and possibly new regulatory tools necessary to monitor self-driving cars. For example Obama says, "Too many people die on our roads - 35,200 a year ago alone - with 94 percent of those the result of human error or choice".

Obama makes it clear that he sees automated driving as a positive development, writing that the technology has the "potential to transform the way we live".

President Barack Obama preempted Tuesday's release of the federal government's guidelines for self-driving cars with a hopeful op-ed in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, wherein he attempted to strike a balance between innovation and safety.

In June, a driver utilizing Tesla's Autopilot system, a feature that allows the auto to be semi-autonomous, was involved in a fatal crash - the first of its kind involving an autonomous vehicle. "Americans deserve to know they'll be safe today even as we develop and deploy the technologies of tomorrow". Self-driving vehicles could also help senior citizens and people with disabilities who can't drive on their own.

The new guidelines will include a 15-point safety check that governs how self-driving vehicles respond to crashes and what protections they must offer passengers.

The president also wrote that government rules are necessary, and that if self-driving vehicles are not safe, the federal government will remove them from the roads. Government sometimes gets it wrong when it comes to rapidly changing technologies.

Veep also racked up a fair few noms, 17, with breakout star Rami Malek expected to win in the best actor category. Sarah Paulson is nominated for best lead actress in a limited series for her role as prosecutor Marcia Clark.

Obama noted in the Post-Gazette piece that the government intends to make sure the policy is "flexible and created to evolve with new advances".

The new policy comes as tech and vehicle companies have started to ramp up their ambitions around self driving cars.

Safety concerns have been raised by the technology that is effectively setting out to make driving safer by eliminating human error.

Obama mentioned a first-ever White House Frontiers Conference to focus on autonomous vehicles, which will be held on October 13.

In an unusual step, the President offered his thoughts in a column published by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the hometown newspaper for a city that finds itself the unexpected center of the self-driving vehicle movement thanks to a partnership between Uber and Carnegie Melon University. Pittsburgh is the first American city to test Uber's self-driving vehicles.
