Israel strikes Syrian positions after shell lands in Golan-army

There were no injuries or damage reported but the Israeli fire was seen as a warning to Syria to pay careful attention that mortar fire not hit the Golan Heights, which Israel acquired from Syria in the 1967 war and later annexed.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said the firing of projectile from Syrian-controlled Golan was most likely unintentional, calling it "spillover" from the fighting in the Arab country.

The shell landed just across the border, causing no injuries, and in retaliation the air force targeted "artillery positions of the Syrian regime" on Saturday, the military said.

Israeli soldiers from the 605 Combat Engineering Corps battalion take part in a training session on the Israeli side of the border between Syria and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights June 1, 2016.

Golan Heights is a strategic plateau captured by Israel from Syria in 1967 and annexed in 1981, a move which has not won global recognition.

Israel had repeatedly declared it would not intervene in the internal fighting in Syria.

Israel has sought to avoid being drawn into Syria's complex war which is now in its sixth year, but it has attacked Syrian military targets when fire from the conflict spills over.

An IDF spokesperson said that the Syrian shell may have been fired at Israel in error, missing its mark as warring factions in Syria attacked each other with missiles and bullets.
