Asteroid Bennu getting first visitor in billions of years

Ultimately, OSIRIS-REx must be launched and sent toward Bennu by October 12 before missing this years launch window. More than 8,000 students from around the world submitted entries.

"This mission will help us determine that".

With the science done and samples collected, the Orion capsule returns to Earth.

OSIRIS-REx is ambitious due to its complexity, mission length, level of surface analysis, and quantity of samples it is created to return.

John Kidd, who received a NASA Space Grant and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace engineering and a master's in systems engineering from the UA, agrees that the best is yet to come. The asteroid, called Bennu-named by a nine year-old from North Carolina-recommended itself for several reasons. Those samples would be delivered to Earth in 2023.

Puzio won't be home tomorrow, either.

A mission to bring dirt back from an asteroid received a jolt last week when a SpaceX rocket exploded on a nearby launch pad.

When Puzio heard about the naming contest, he was reading a series of mythological fiction books by the author Rick Riordan.

OSIRIS-REx is an acronym for Origins, Spectral Interpretations, Resource Identification and Security-Regolith Explorer.

According to ancient mythology, Bennu was the manifestation of the god Osiris on Earth, taking the form of a heron-a slender bird.

When it launches Thursday night, the RL10 will help rocket the OSIRIS-REx payload onto its path to meet Bennu.

Olympics: Rio 2016: There you go, I am the greatest, says Bolt
That makes them the first country to win back-to-back-to-back Olympic titles in the event since the USA won in 1968, '72 and '76. Friday's triumph was potentially the most awkward, with Bolt's gold medal hopes reliant on the performances of his team-mates.

"That 2135 fly-by is going to tweak Bennu's orbit, potentially putting it on course for the Earth later that century", Dante Lauretta, OSIRIS-REx principal investigator, told the Sunday Times.

The weather forecast looks promising for the mission's planned 7:05 p.m. Thursday liftoff, about a half-hour before sunset. "The Atlas V vehicle was safely buttoned up and secure inside the VIF". Each day, the start of the window begins five minutes later.

What OSIRIS-REx won't do ... The ride will be over in less than an hour. OSIRIS is scheduled to arrive in orbit around Bennu in August 2018. It is expected to leave in March 2021, but the timeline has some wiggle room.

N Sept. 24, 2023: Finally free of Osiris-Rex, which will continue to orbit the sun, the sample container re-enters the atmosphere at more than 27,000 miles per hour.

The probe will visit a "near-Earth object" that traces an orbit around the Sun similar to the Earth's. It's the 13th major NASA mission to use that rocket. Bennu is as large as five football fields and like most of the known 720,000 asteroids, it is composed of primitive materials leftover from the solar system's formation 4.5 billion years ago. They contain a variety of valuable resources and slam into our planet on a regular basis, occasionally snuffing out most of Earth's lifeforms.

According to CNN, after arriving at the dark, potentially unsafe space body the NASA craft will spend months taking pictures and making scans of its surface, and build a map.

To assure success and efficiency, the spacecraft is loaded with three cameras, a scanning LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), Thermal Emission Spectrometer (OTES), Visible and Infrared Spectrometer (OVIRS) and Regolith X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (REXIS).

NASA hopes to get at least 2 ounces (60 grams) and maybe as much as 4.4 pounds (2 kilograms) of asteroid litter.

But only a fourth of that material will be analyzed in 2023.

The $800 million project is all about collecting a portion of the rock.
