Nebraska lines up with 10 players to honor Sam Foltz

Nebraska brought out 10 players and no punter for its first punt formation Saturday night against Fresno State, honoring former teammate Sam Foltz. Rather than send out freshman punter Caleb Lightbourn, head coach Mike Riley made a decision to take a penalty by sending only 10 players on the field for the punt and leaving Foltz's spot empty.

The Huskers were flagged for delay of game on the play, but, in a classy move, Fresno State declined the penalty.

Foltz and former Michigan State punter Mike Sadler, who was driving and also died, were returning from a kicking camp in Wisconsin when the accident occurred. They draped it over the NU bench, where it will stay during home games. The two were riding in a auto with LSU kicker Colby Delahoussaye after a kicking camp. He was not ejected, which was important since he would have had to sit out the first half of next week's game had he been. The Huskers didn't have too much trouble with Fresno State, picking up an impressive 43-10 win.

After the cheers quited, freshman Caleb Lightbourn took the field and delivered a 29-yard punt. But our guys realize when we play well and we don't turn the ball over we can make some plays.

Running empty - Fresno State generated only 31 rushing yards on 26 plays, the 1.2 yards per play just missing the top five worst games going back through the 2000 season.

"I thought we'd take a step forward with penalties and it didn't feel like it", he said after the win.

Riley, who came to Lincoln last year with a reputation for developing passers, will be able to implement more of his pro-style offense once four-year starter Armstrong leaves.

Armstrong completed 5-of-10 passes for 108 yards for the game, including a 57-yard touchdown strike to Moore on the first play of the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. The play ignited the Bulldog offense, earning points off the turnover by going seven plays for 32 yards, capped by a Virgil to Peck 7-yard TD. The Huskers appear to be one of the more talented teams in the Big Ten West and are expected to be serious contenders for that division's championship. "We're used to going places where there's an adversarial crowd", he said. Previous year the team had 27 turnovers and lost some close games due to turnovers.
