Sex-offender swimmer Brock Turner granted early release

Turner bowed his head as he rushed past a crowd of reporters outside the Santa Clara County jail in San Jose just after 6 a.m. (9 a.m. ET).

A handful of protesters were present when he was released, but they remained silent as he walked about 30 feet to his parents auto.

Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith expressed frustration with the sentencing in a brief statement following Turner's release. "He should be in prison right now, but he's not in our custody".

In the wake of outrage and the recall effort, Persky last month asked to be assigned to the court's civil division.

Turner's early release for good behavior was the latest turn in a case that sparked a widespread outcry by many who believed he was given preferential treatment and too light of a sentence for the January 2015 assault. He was swiftly ushered out of the Main Jail in San Jose into a white SUV. Jerry McNerney, D-Pleasanton, Rep. Loretta Sanchez, D-Orange County, state Sen. But Dan Newman, a spokesman for the campaign in favor of the ballot measure, called the list "merely a starting point".

The light sentence “sends a unsafe message, ” Dauber said.

Burt said Persky has a "biased and distorted sense of justice" and an "extensive pattern of bias" - he claimed Persky has empathy for defendants with whom he identifies.

The sentence prompted an online petition with more than 1 million signatures urging impeachment of the judge.

The group Chief Probation Officers of California also supports the measure, as an incentive for inmates who work to improve themselves behind bars.

Several elected officials, including Palo Alto Mayor Pat Burt, called for Persky's resignation on Friday.

"I think he served an unfair sentence in the first place", UC Davis student Lindsy Hunt said.

"That's why it's important that fathers, boyfriends, members of Congress and Senate and legislature, mayors and city councils and brothers and cousins and uncles and grandfathers; straight, LGBTQ, Latino, African-American, white, racially mixed, Asian-American - all men should rise together in solidarity" with women, De Leon said.

1 dead, 4 hurt in highway shootout; bullet holes cover SUV
In a statement to Action News, Wawa officials say the shooting did not take place inside their store or in the parking lot. Authorities stressed that the investigation was in its "early phase" and said more serious charges could be filed.

Turner was found guilty in March of three felony charges: assault with intent to commit rape of an intoxicated/unconscious person, penetration of an intoxicated person and penetration of an unconscious person.

Turner was charged with sexual assault instead of rape, because although he digitally penetrated the woman, he did not have intercourse with her, and California law does not define that as rape. You and me. You are the cause, I am the effect.”.

"You don't know me, but you've been inside me, and that's why we're here today", she told her attacker in the statement read in court.

Later, she expressed disappointment at the "gentle" sentence her attacker received. “My damage was internal, unseen, I carry it with me.

Santa Clara County Presiding Judge Rise Pichon said she has granted the request of Judge Aaron Persky. The prohibition includes mixed drinks and shots of hard liquor, but not beer and wine, at on-campus parties.

Smith also sent a letter to California Gov.

Prosecutors had demanded a sentence of six years in state prison.

Brock Turner's case ignited fierce debate over campus rape and the criminal justice system. In his decision, he said positive character references and Turner's remorse and lack of previous criminal record were mitigating factors.

The bill would close a disparity in state law meting out different severity of punishments based on whether a sexual-assault victim was conscious at the time of the attack. Greene County Sheriff Gene Fischer said Turner must register there as a sex offender if he moves in with his parents and would have to check in with authorities every three months for life.

The woman, who was not a student, was taken to a hospital and treated for her injuries.

Following his release from Santa Clara County Jail in California on Friday, Turner will have five days to report to Fischer's office in Xenia.
