Kyle Larson holds off Chase Elliott for first Sprint Cup victory

Kyle Larson holds off Chase Elliott for first Sprint Cup victory

Through his first two full seasons in the Cup Series, the touted 24-year-old had finished 17th and 19th in the Cup standings.

Larson won his 99th career Cup start Sunday at MI, outdueling Chase Elliott on the final restart - after both drivers spun their tires - to put himself into the Chase for the Sprint Cup with just two races remaining in the regular season. "It was finally going to be it. He loves winners", Larson said Monday. The track just suits his style and you can believe between his own skills and the Gibbs equipment that he'll be running in the top-five for most of the race. We parked it for him so that was really cool.

After the race, Larson told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio's Claire B. Lang that he hopes his hair grows fast, because more race-day haircuts may be in order. Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott and Chris Buescher could all be in the Chase for the Sprint Cup this year, a sign that the younger drivers may be ready to emerge in NASCAR's top series.

Any time we have a first-time victor, and link that with the fact that the entire weekend was about drivers getting their first career wins in their respective series, that's what really creates an exciting, fun weekend of NASCAR racing. It also broke a 99-race drought for Chip Ganassi Racing, dating to Jamie McMurray's victory at Talladega in October 2013.

"All in all a really strong day for the Miller Lite team", he said. "When he came to our team, people say, 'Well, he'll hang around for a couple years, then he'll go to a team where he can win". The team rallied around him. "Now, I'll be able to go back and watch this, and it's going to be awesome", McDowell said. I saw Kyle and Chase, and everybody. However, he brought the celebration back when he won his first Nationwide Series race (now called the Xfinity Series) in 2014.

As the laps wore down, the # 42 Chevy of Kyle Larson held the lead.

"We worked really, really hard to get a win, and just haven't done it", Larson said. Chad (Johnston, crew chief) and the pit crew and everybody. We got Jamie in there a year ago and now we got Kyle in there.

The runner-up spot left Elliott frustrated.

Keselowski, who is second in Cup points to leader Kevin Harvick (Chevrolet), who finished fifth on Sunday, did have good words for the new lower down-force aero package mandated at MIS by NASCAR.

Larson trailed Elliott when Michael Annett blew a tire on Lap 187.

With the win, Larson jumps into the Chase for the first time.

Brad Keselowski was lined up directly behind Kyle Larson for the contest's final waving of the green flag on lap 192. Larson closed on Elliott but lost the ground gained in lapped traffic with just under 20 laps to go. "That was the only place you could make a large sum of ground in a short period of time". "I feel we definitely have a shot to make it to the final eight".

"You either do or you don't and I didn't". I got to leave in the end. "It's a neat initiative, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of the kids at the race track". Look for him to add to that today.

There were only four cautions in the 200-lap, 400-mile race.

But shocker No. 2 of the race came as Kyle Busch led 256 laps, but a broken suspension part and the appearance of Justin Allgaier's No. 46 auto at the worst possible time - lap 359 - led to a 39th-place finish. We really miss Bryan. So, thanks to him. "I like it a lot". Logano, the pole victor, finished 10th. Emerging with the lead after pitting was Chase Elliott.
