1 dead, 4 hurt in highway shootout; bullet holes cover SUV

One person was killed and four were wounded in shootings in Egg Harbor Township, Atlantic County, including one that happened outside a Wawa.

Police were investigating around an SUV covered with bullet holes in the parking lot of a convenience store in Egg Harbor Township and were also investigating on a nearby highway.

A third vehicle, a black Dodge Ram, may also have been involved in the battle and continued east on the expressway to exit near Pleasantville, police said.

Stukes and Stukes-Williams remained hospitalized Tuesday, said police. They also announced multiple weapons charges - including not being lawfully able to carry a firearm charges - against the occupants of the Expedition: Lenardo Caro, 24, of Little Egg Harbor Township; Yahshaun Stukes-Williams, 19, of Mays Landing; Shaun Stukes, 38, of Atlantic City; and a 16-year-old boy not identified since he's a minor.

The driver, 24-year-old Anthony Hicks, of Mays Landing, was uninjured.

Investigators traced the path of the bullet riddled Ford Expedition back to an area near a Wawa, where they located four weapons, including three handguns and an AK-style assault rifle.

The people in the two cars knew each other and the incident was not a random act, state police Capt. Stephen Jones said.

Anthony Hicks, 24, who was driving the Maxima, is charged with certain persons not to possess a firearm, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful goal.

Each of the four Expedition occupants (Caro, Stukes-Williams, Stukes and the juvenile) were charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, four counts each; possession of a weapon for unlawful goal; possession of an assault weapon; and possession of a defaced firearm. All four are facing a number of weapons charges. The truck had continued eastbound on the expressway after the incident and was believed to have exited in the Pleasantville area, police said.

During the investigation, witnesses told detectives they saw a black Dodge Ram pickup truck that may have been involved in the shooting. Police are still searching for that vehicle and its occupants. The men are also accused of employing a juvenile in a crime. He was dead from a gunshot wound.

Authorities stressed that the investigation was in its "early phase" and said more serious charges could be filed. In a statement to Action News, Wawa officials say the shooting did not take place inside their store or in the parking lot.
