Gov. Christie announces changes to make MVC lines shorter

Gov. Christie announces changes to make MVC lines shorter

The bills were pushed by Democratic lawmakers in the state to implement smart-gun technology and raise standards for handgun permits, but the Republican Governor conditionally vetoed them, the paper reported.

Christie's veto recommended ditching the smart-gun initiative and lowering permit standards, because, as he told the paper, New Jersey's regulations are already "among the most unreasonable and onerous in the country". There continue to be doubts as to whether the biometric palm and/or finger readers on such guns would function properly if the hands of the authorized user were wet or his fingertips caked with blood.

The group called the latter proposal an example "that anti-gun lawmakers completely oppose concealed carry and self-defense in New Jersey".

"This bill is reflective of the relentless campaign by the Democratic legislature to make New Jersey as inhospitable as possible to lawful gun ownership and sales, and I refuse to allow that to happen", Christie said of the smart guns legislation, according to ABC News. A "shall issue" policy means "anyone who is not prohibited from owning a gun and who can demonstrate familiarity with the safe handling [of] guns" can get a permit.

Scott Bach, executive director of NRA-affiliated Association of New Jersey Rifle & Pistol Clubs, said Christie "has made a bold and defiant statement to the legislature in support of the Second Amendment".

The area has a constant stream of visitors, many of them global , who could carry the virus elsewhere should they get infected. The Zika virus has made its way to the Miami Beach area, heightening fears over the spread of the virus in the Sunshine State.

"The right to own a gun is a fundamental one enumerated in the Constitution".

Christie also recommended eliminating the "justifiable need" requirement.

Critics, including Christie, say this regulation makes it nearly impossible for most people to obtain carry permits.

"This revised standard would allow law-abiding New Jersey residents to exercise their Second Amendment rights more reasonably, while still preventing unsafe persons from legally obtaining firearms", noted Christie. "Because of our proactive approach to cracking down on gun violence, we have been fortunate that our state's stringent laws have stopped a great deal of that violence at our border".
