North Korea Launches Netflix-Style Streaming Service, State Media Reports

North Korea Launches Netflix-Style Streaming Service, State Media Reports

"When judging from the content of the video, the North [appears to have] technology related to IPTV [internet protocol television]", a South Korean professor at a national university said on condition of anonymity. Perhaps North Korea's infamous Squirrel and Hedgehog-the country's well-known children's cartoon that teaches about war and violence-will soon be available too.

North Korea has become further isolated after a January nuclear test, its fourth, and the launch of a long-range rocket in February brought the toughest-ever UN Security Council sanctions against the regime.

The system, which goes by the name "Manbang" ("Everywhere"), functions like a sharply pared-down Netflix with an on-demand service menu that divides programming by channel and genre.

According to NK News, the box will also give viewers access to Netflix-type functionality by allowing them to search for content and browse categories including video-on-demand content.

Stevenson Advances to Boxing Final After Nikitin Ruled Out
It was a bit easier than the 19-year-old expected as he won his semifinal bout by walkover due to injury to his opponent. But Stevenson spoke glowingly of the retired champion after meeting him earlier in the Rio tournament.

Now, it appears that North Korea wants a piece of streaming video.

As Variety reports, citing NK News, the service runs on a dedicated streaming box similar to the Apple TV or Roku. The country is known to not have a lot of things we take for granted- a democratic government, freedom of expression, internet.

That's right-North Korea created its own version of Netflix. Despite its official title as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the country is widely recognized to be under the dictatorship of Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un, who inherited the title from his father.

It is likely that only a few thousand people will have access to the service, with North Korea consistently ranking as one of the least connected countries in the world.
