Red Cross: Relief operation cost, at least $30M

The Red Cross has called for volunteers in the wake of severe flooding in parts of Louisiana. At least 40,000 homes were damaged and eight people killed in the historic Louisiana floods, the governor said Tuesday, giving a stark assessment of the widespread disaster. The fact that so many people in Louisiana have been forced out of their own homes this week is heartbreaking. They are in Louisiana.

When disaster strikes anywhere in the United States, the American Red Cross steps in, and some Kansans are headed to flood-ravaged Louisiana to help out. Many of them are working to deliver meals. Michigan-based disaster program manager Armando Falcon says most of the volunteers are in Baton Rouge. Flooding is expected to continue for several days, and once waters recede it will take some time to fully uncover the extent of the devastation.

"I went home today and it's not even a home". Donations enable the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to and help people recovery from these disasters.

When asked if she had ever seen anything like the flooding happening around her, she responded, "No, not in my entire life".
