Fed members split on timing of next rate hike, markets unchanged

The minutes said given the improved economic outlook, officials believe a rate increase "was or would soon be warranted".

The FOMC minutes of the July meeting published later today will also be scrutinized for any possible clues on future Fed policy. The dollar bought Yen100.70 in recent trade, compared with Yen100.33 late Tuesday. After liftoff from near zero in December, officials have twice cut their projections for the path of rates this year, as improving USA economic data contrast with signs of slowing growth overseas.

Esther George, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, cast the only vote against holding the rate steady in July. The Federal Reserve has made a lot of similar commentary recently, but with just one rate hike in the past eight years, it seems unlikely.

In other currency trading, the dollar rose against a host of emerging-market currencies, including the Mexican peso and Brazilian real, as oil prices ticked lower.

The Fed's next meetings are scheduled for September, November and December.

With equities on the back foot, bonds edged up, with fixed-income investors' eyes firmly on the Fed minutes after Tuesday's comments from Dudley and Lockhart.

Wall Street has been trading at record highs in the past few weeks, partly supported by expectations the Fed will continue to keep rates low. Additionally, St. Louis Fed President James Bullard will speak about monetary policy at the Wealth and Asset Management Research Conference at Washington University in St. Louis at 1 p.m. Traders are pricing in a 18% probability the rate target will rise to 0.5% to 0.75% as of September.
