Brendan Dassey, Featured in 'Making a Murderer,' has Conviction Overturned

Dassey, who was 16 at the time, was likely developmentally disabled, and seemed not to fully understand what he was saying in his questioning, or its implications. The judge said that Dassey's confession to police in 2006 was "so clearly involuntary" that a state appeals court ruling to the contrary was an unreasonable application of established federal law.

After Netflix's release of the shocking documentary series in 2015, Making A Murderer, the world was suddenly called attention to the imprisonment of Steven Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey.

Dassey had been convicted, along with his uncle, Steven Avery, over the rape and murder of Teresa Halbach in 2007. Both Avery and Dassey were key subjects in the Netflix series written and produced by filmmakers Moira Demos and Laura Ricciardi.

Beforehand, Dassey's lawyers had also claimed that the officers involved in the confessions were guilty of fact feeding and suggestions of leniency. It gives prosecutors 90 days to decide whether to retry Dassey. In Friday's court decision, the judge agreed, overturning a life sentence for first-degree intentional homicide, mutilating a corpse and second-degree intentional assault.

This decision is huge for fans of Making A Murderer, who watched footage of Dassey being coerced into giving a confession to police on the Netflix series just a few months ago.

Petition launched to end Rotten Tomatoes for 'unjust' reviews
Even the recent remake of Ghostbusters has garnered outrage from fans. "Best experience of my life", Ayer tweeted . But some of those fans are blaming Rotten Tomatoes for the poor reception, not the movies themselves.

Duffin said in his ruling that investigators made false promises to Dassey by assuring him "he had nothing to worry about".

Laura Nirider, one of Dassey's lawyers, tells The Associated Press that her client "is in shock and wants to go home". His attorneys argued that his constitutional rights were violated throughout the investigation. This, the judge wrote, led Dassey - whom the judge described in detail as a special education student who "suffered from certain intellectual deficits" - to confess that he helped Avery kill Halbach.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, two of the jurors in Avery's trial were related to members of the county's sheriff's department.

The Guardian reports that Avery's current attorney, Kathleen Zellner, who took up the appeal case in January, stated: "Steven Avery is so happy for Brendan". Zellner said in a statement that she's confident that Avery's conviction will eventually be overturned "when an unbiased court" reviews new evidence.

While the news comes as a surprise, Earl Avery says he's hopeful for what it means for Steven's case.
