Alligator almost severs Florida woman's hand off, authorities say

A woman visiting the Florida Everglades was attacked on Friday by an alligator that bit her hand almost off, local media reported. The alligator bit the woman when she was trying to retrieve a dropped can from the water, he added.

"She was standing on the dock, dropped a can into the water and as she reached in to retrieve the can that's when she was bitten by the alligator", said BSFR Spokesperson Mike Jachles.

Two witnesses grabbed hold of Sexton's legs and pulled her to safety, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The alligator was trapped and removed from the area.

A spokeswoman for North Broward Medical Center, where Sexton was taken, said that she was listed in stable condition in the hospital's intensive care unit. She experienced significant blood loss and went into shock, reports CBS Miami.

"The hand was still attached though it was a very severe, nearly full amputation of the hand", Jachles said, adding that the woman was stabilized after bleeding severely and losing consciousness. It was then that a four to five-foot long alligator bit her.
