13 cases of West Nile Virus reported this season in Colorado

The Adams County Conservation District's West Nile Virus Program will be conducting an ultra low volume (ULV) mosquito control operation in York Springs Borough, Latimore and Huntington townships, in Adams County.

But if Coloradans need a reason to keep mosquitoes away, it is the West Nile virus. Mosquitoes acquire the virus by feeding on infected birds.

Laboratory testing results available later this week will help make a determination, according to a district news release.

There have been no reported confirmed or probable human cases of WNV in Ottawa in 2016.

Less than 1 percent of people infected with the virus get seriously ill with symptoms that include high fever, muscle weakness, stiff neck, disorientation, mental confusion, tremors, confusion, paralysis and coma.

West Nile virus is continuing to spread across the Southland, with vector-control officials announcing Monday that the virus was detected for the first time this year in six areas. These infected mosquitoes can then transmit West Nile to humans and animals. Mild symptoms can include headache, fever, body aches, nausea or a rash on chest, stomach or back. This is a good reminder for residents to eliminate any standing water and to take personal protective measures to avoid mosquito bites. People who are older or who have certain medical conditions that affect the immune system are at greater risk for serious illness.
