Android bug leaves 900 million phones at risk

Android bug leaves 900 million phones at risk

FOUR NEWLY DISCOVERED security flaws have been discovered in Android devices with a Qualcomm chip could allow an attacker to take complete control of an affected device.

Apparently, according to a cyber-security company from Israel named Checkpoint, there are four flaws in the Qualcomm chipsets that are found in many Android-based smartphones. For a user's phone to be attacked, he or she would have to be tricked into installing a malicious app onto their handset.

The devices that contain the bug include BlackBerry Priv and Dtek50, Google Nexus 5X, Nexus 6 and Nexus 6P, OnePlus One, OnePlus 2 and OnePlus 3 and U.S. versions of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Samsung S7 Edge amongst others. One flaw found with this vulnerability called Quadrooter, can even affect the new BlackBerry DTEK50.

The attackers can exploit the bugs to gradually take control over a device and gain access to data. Qualcomm, which makes 80 percent of the chipsets in the Android ecosystem, has nearly as much of an effect on Android's security as Google. Hopefully, Google will speed things up with the new security patch. "Distributors and carriers issuing patches can only do so after receiving fixed driver packs from Qualcomm", adds Check Point in a blog post.

Cuomo seeks to stop sex offenders from playing Pokemon Go
Klein warning about how Pokemon Go and similar games could be used in risky ways by convicted sex offenders. Jeff Klein and Diane Savino released a report in which they said the game could be used to target children.

The users who are anxious about their phones can download the application from the Google Play Store called Quadrooter Scanner. And while there is no evidence that they have been used in attacks, the company believes it is only a matter of time before it happens. The app enables Android users to find out if their device is vulnerable, and prompts them to download patches for the problem. Because Qualcomm has already sent out the bug fixes to all of its partners, so it expects smartphone and tablet OEMs to roll out these security patches sometime in the near future.

Check Point lead mobile security researcher, Adam Donenfeld, recently revealed the vulnerabilities affecting Android devices built using the Qualcomm chipsets. Critical security updates must pass through the entire supply chain before they can be made available to end users.

Android users may be at risk of having their data stolen.
