Trump accepts a Purple Heart amid veteran controversy

Donald Trump is saluting a veteran who presented the Republican presidential nominee with his Purple Heart. "I have such confidence in you, '" Trump said as the crowd applauded. "This was much easier", Trump remarked.

Dorfman told the candidate he wanted to give him the Purple Heart to remind him that "more than one vet" died for the U.S., in reference to the ongoing controversy and war of words between Trump and the Gold Star parents of a deceased U.S. Army captain, according to NBC reporter Katy Tur, who covered the campaign event.

"Something very nice just happened to me". Trump never served in the military, though he once said that he "always felt that I was in the military" because he went to military school.

The Purple Heart is awarded to military members who are wounded or killed while serving.

At last week's Democratic National Convention, Khizr Khan criticized Trump's call to temporarily ban Muslims from entering the United States and accused Trump of sacrificing "nothing and no one".

In response, Mr Trump said he "made a lot of sacrifices", citing the numerous "great structures" he built.

President Obama, speaking with reporters at the White House Tuesday, issued his harshest criticism of Trump yet, saying that the NY businessman is "woefully unprepared".

"The Republican nominee is unfit to serve as president", Obama said at a White House news conference with the Prime Minister of Singapore.

A tense atmosphere preceded Trump's appearance in an auditorium at Briar Woods High School.

Later during the rally, Trump claimed that 20 people have given Hillary Clinton a total of $60 million and he would like to know who those people are.

The candidate responded: "15 seconds of fame". Virginia - a once reliably Republican state that went twice for Democrat Barack Obama - may be essential to the real estate mogul's hopes of cobbling together the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency, a task that may grow more challenging with the addition of the state's junior USA senator and former governor, Tim Kaine, to the Democratic ticket.
