Trump used charity cash for Tebow memorabilia

Trump used charity cash for Tebow memorabilia

Donald Trump the individual did not buy the Tebow gear. He's also totally insufferable-part of the issue is the obsessive discourse around him, to be fair-and is basically a ideal fit for Donald Trump.

Komen organization, the breast-cancer nonprofit that hosted the event, received the money from the Donald J. Trump Foundation, another nonprofit charity he founded in 1987.

But what Trump did with the helmet also is an important part of the situation, and his campaign did not respond to inquiries, according to the report.

Trump eventually came away with the helmet, winning it with a $12,000 bid.

Forget the lawsuits, the bankruptcies and myriad failed business ventures-this potentially illegal purchase unearthed by the Washington Post is Donald Trump's most embarrassing executive decision yet. Trump was the foundation's president, but he had not donated to the charity for three years preceding the purchase, according to the Post.

Anti-doping leader has no sympathy for unhelpful Russians
The latest allegations relate to the period since the Russian anti-doping agency was suspended in November over accusations it covered up drug use.

Tax law experts questioned whether the businessman violated IRS rules that are created to keep nonprofit officials from using their charities to help themselves, like banning the "furnishing of goods" by private foundations to their own officers, the newspaper reported. Anyone who violates the ban is supposed to report it to the IRS, and could be liable for a tax penalty.

A spokeswoman for Trump didn't immediately return a request seeking comment.

One thing is for sure: The helmet and jersey don't appear to be in his fancy-yet-disorganized Manhattan offices, or at least it wasn't when he showed it off to the Wall Street Journal previous year.

"That would be a classic violation of the prohibition on a charity being operated for the private inurement (benefit) of the charity's creator", wrote Brett G. Kappel, an expert on tax-exempt organizations at the Akerman law firm in Washington. If it's sitting on a shelf in a Trump office, or in a friend's office for that matter, it is not fine.

Trump praised Tebow multiple times on Twitter after the Heisman Trophy victor was traded from the Broncos to the New York Jets in 2012, before brief stints at the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles. The items up for sale: A Denver Broncos helmet, autographed by then-star quarterback Tim Tebow, and a Tebow jersey.
