Rep. Lewis On Gun Violence: 'We Are Blind To A Crisis'

Ryan called for decorum but could scarcely be heard over Democrats chanting "no bill, no break!" to demand action on guns.

Snapchat is a social media platform that allows users to post pictures and videos that will disappear after 24 hours.

"We must never give up or give in", said Lewis, who got involved in civil rights protests while in Nashville and was arrested after a sit-in at a downtown lunch counter in 1960.

The House Speaker said, "This isn't trying to come up with a solution to a problem".

Republicans fiercely resisted the Democratic pressure, saying their colleagues had accomplished nothing other than disrupting the business of the House to score political points.

John Lewis revived Wednesday one of the most evocative forms of protest from the civil rights movement - the sit-in - to demand House Republicans move on gun control. We have turned a deaf ear to the blood of innocents.

GOP leaders said the rules were based on the notion that images from the House floor "might be taken to carry the imprimatur of the House". The assailant also died.

California Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein had previously introduced similar legislation in December following the mass shooting of 14 people in San Bernardino, California, but Senators rejected the bill in a 54-45 vote along party lines that same month.

"It is not helpful to have had the sit-in on the House side because that made it partisan, and I've worked very hard to keep this bipartisan, so that setback our efforts somewhat", she said of her bill, which failed on a procedural vote Thursday.

But the sit-in drew attention to Capitol Hill, where lawmakers have been unable to act on gun control legislation in the aftermath of the Orlando shooting. Murphy staged a 15-hour filibuster on June 15 to bolster support for the bill, but ultimately both measures were defeated on Monday.

Justin Bieber gets in a fight, parties in Cleveland
News of Justin Bieber's possible meltdown comes as more details have emerged about his fight with Lamont Richmond . Lamont claims that Justin got in his face and called him a "motherf*****" after he asked for a simple autograph.

At one point overnight, the two sides almost came to blows after Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas approached the Democrats and yelled, "Radical Islam!"

"We are not going to allow stunts like this to stop us from carrying out the people's business", Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said Thursday morning in dismissing the protest.

Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-Ill., has been using Snapchat since the sit-in began to interview Democrats about why they're protesting.

Most of the 188 Democrats took turns speaking, joined by dozens of Senate Democrats. One after another, they spoke of the need for gun control and talked of constituents who had been killed. Rep. Debbie Dingell of MI, whose husband former Rep. John Dingell is a longtime NRA supporter, won thunderous applause and a standing ovation after she talked in personal terms about her experience growing up in a home with gun violence.

House security officers opened up the visitors gallery shortly after 9 a.m., and about 30 people walked in and filled the seats, some accompanied by children.

A crowd of several hundred gun control advocates gathered outside the Capitol.

The sit-in evoked memories of a protest by House Republicans in August 2008 to push for a vote on offshore drilling.

Jackson said although it was unlikely Republicans would schedule a vote on gun control legislation it was instructive for voters to see who was eager to vote, and who wasn't. Republican leaders again ordered C-SPAN cameras turned off as the protest resumed Wednesday afternoon.

But in their defense, C-SPAN then tweeted: "C-SPAN has no control over the U.S. House TV cameras".

Republicans say barring people whose names appear on a government "no-fly" list from buying a gun, as the legislation would do, would infringe on Second Amendment rights. C-SPAN eventually began airing the periscope stream for the first time in the channel's history.
