Supreme Court lets stand law banning some semi-automatic assault weapons

Fresh off the deadliest mass shooting in USA history, the Supreme Court refused Monday to hear a challenge to assault weapons bans passed in CT and NY after the Newtown elementary school massacre of 2012.

The "Iron Pipeline" is a reference to the interstate commerce in guns used in crimes in NY that are purchased in states with more lax laws on firearms sales, numerous south along the I-95 corridor.

Cuomo pushed the State Legislature to enact the SAFE Act in 2013, shortly after a gunman killed 27 people at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. He suggested the timing of the recent Orlando mass shooting hurt his petition.

The Supreme Court did not comment on the law, simply deciding that they will not hear the appeal.

Malloy said the Supreme Court decision means that gun-safety legislation works and is constitutionally clear. Advocates urged Congress to expand background checks in an effort to curb gun violence in the US. Only two members of the court, Clarence Thomas and the late Antonin Scalia, had publicly indicated they believed state bans flouted Heller and the Second Amendment.

The Supreme Court has repeatedly turned away challenges to gun restrictions since two landmark decisions that spelled out the right to a handgun to defend one's own home.

TSA lines saw short wait times during Memorial Day weekend
Pistole, the agency had pivoted to an intelligence-based approach that suggested the need for fewer checkpoint screeners. TSA is also now considering the use of automated screening technology now in use at London's Heathrow Airport.

June Shew, a gun sports enthusiast in his 80s, challenged the CT law thatprohibits 183 specific weapons - calling the measure "irrational".

The court's decision, contained in a lengthy listing of cases accepted and denied, is not a total surprise. The Court decided that owning weapons like the AR-15 is, indeed, protected by the Second Amendment.

In October 2014, a three-judge panel of the Second Circuit unanimously upheld Covello and a decision in a case challenging a similar law in NY.

CNN reports that the president of the guns rights group Connecticut Citizens' Defense League, Scott Wilson Sr., said in a statement his group intends "to renew our challenge to Connecticut's blatantly unconstitutional ban as soon as there are five Justices sitting on the Supreme Court committed to the proper understanding of the Second Amendment".

A federal ban enacted in 1994 had similar prohibitions on certain semi-automatic firearms and magazines that were defined as high-capacity, but that law expired in 2004.

But the CCDL insisted the state law went too far.
