National Hockey League officially set to expand to Las Vegas

Are the Oakland Raiders really going to end up playing in Las Vegas sometime in the near future?

Quebec City in Quebec, Canada, also was considered by the National Hockey League for expansion, but is not expected to receive a franchise.

Vegas is the largest American city (2.2 million people) without a professional sports team.

The NHL's Board of Governors will meet on June 22 in Las Vegas ahead of its annual awards ceremony where a decision on expansion could be finalized.

Foley hasn't indicated what he might call his new franchise, but most believe it will be the Las Vegas Black Knights.

The NHL is preparing to announce it has chosen Las Vegas to join the league as an expansion team, according to published reports.

The city already has an arena - T-Mobile Arena - that opened in April and can host games. Black Knight is also the name of his financial services company.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman had proposed an expansion fee of $500 million, a huge jump from the $80 million paid by the Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild when the latest expansion occured in 2000.
