Automakers still selling new cars fitted with faulty Takata airbags

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recalled almost 70 million Takata air bags after the safety agency confirmed the cause behind the inflators' propensity to rupture, especially in humid climates.

So far, at least 100 injuries and 13 deaths have been linked to the airbag defect. Moisture contamination of the ammonium nitrate propellant is one factor officials have identified as a reason why Takata inflators have ruptured.

"The company is approaching NHTSA's coordinated remedy order on an accelerated timetable, having included an additional 1 million vehicles in the most recent recall expansion", the company said in a statement provided to The Detroit News.

The NHTSA has a list of affected vehicles and pertinent recall information on their website. The same day Japan's transport ministry recalled 7 million vehicles.

The recalls are being phased in during the next two years.

Seven auto makers have announced a recall of about 4.4 million USA vehicles with defective Takata air bag inflators.

Regulators last week revealed details about more than 12 million vehicles recalled by eight automakers: Chrysler, Honda, Toyota, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru, Mitsubishi and Ferrari.

GM also continues its close monitoring and study of the performance of Takata airbag inflators in its vehicles in the field. 2009-2011 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500. They include the Ford Edge, Fusion, Mustang, Ranger and Lincoln MKZ dating back to as early as 2005.

Cars in the 2011 model year or earlier located in the following states will go first, according to NHTSA documents: Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan) and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
