Snapchat 'Speed Filter' leads to lawsuit after crash

Snapchat 'Speed Filter' leads to lawsuit after crash

"On and before September 10, 2015, Snapchat knew that wrecks had occurred due to the use of Snapchat's app while driving at high speed", the complaint says.

The MLN statement continues: "The passenger in McGee's Mercedes saw the speed on the Snapchat filter hit 113 miles per hour".

Wentworth has permanent brain damage from the accident and is unable to work. Maynard and his wife - who was also in the auto at the time of the accident - are seeking damages to cover his medical bills.

"Snapchat's speed filter facilitated McGee's excessive speeding", Maynard's lawyers wrote.

It seems unclear how this will play out. The company says a warning not to snap and drive appears in the app but when this reporter used it, no such caution appeared. It's bad enough that we have to share the road with people wantonly texting while driving, but now we have to worry about some narcissistic selfie-taker putting our lives at risk for the sake of racking up a three-digit speed on their Snapchat filter. Ugh. The claim says that McGee was trying to hit 100 miles per hour when her crashed into the Maynards' auto.

Craig Zadan and Neil Meron , who produced the 2007 movie-musical version of Hairspray , will produce the live television edition. Hough, who is slated to make his Broadway debut next season in Singin' in the Rain , will play TV host Corny Collins.

The Georgia lawsuit references a case in Brazil where a young lady was accused of driving fast to impress her friends and crashing.

Maynard was working as an Uber driver when he was involved in the crash.

She was evidently excited to have reached this speed as she slightly slowed to 107 miles per hour while pulling out her phone to document it using the Snapchat filter that indicates how fast your phone is moving. In December 2015, some reports suggested that Snapchat's speed filter may have played a role in the deaths of three Philadelphia women in their 20s, after the black Camaro the women were driving smashed into a parked tractor-trailer carrying herbicide and erupted into flames. In 2014, more than 1.3 million people were injured in auto crashes, with 431,000 of them caused by distracted driving. A Snapchat image was posted reportedly of Ms McGee with a bloodied face and on a stretcher, along with the words "Lucky to be alive".

It turns that out law firms all over the country have had their eyes on Snapchat's "speed filter" for a while, and they're actively looking for cases they can use as an excuse to sue the multi-billion dollar company.
