No change in autism rates — CDC

No change in autism rates — CDC

It's a campaign created to raise awareness about Autism and help shine a light on a disorder that one in 68 children will battle, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

The researchers say it is too early to tell if the overall prevalence rate has stabilized because the numbers vary widely across ADDM communities.

"Most of the states are underestimating, " Zahorodny said.

Methods for detecting early signs of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are primarily observational, spanning from parent reports to clinical evaluation. The data were derived from health and special education records of children who were 8 years old and living in Baltimore County in 2012.

The causes of autism are not completely understood; studies show that both environment and genetics may play a role.

Rates varied among the CDC's study communities and especially varied by race and socioeconomic differences, pointing out the need for more awareness and faster diagnosis. "This year we want to go beyond simply promoting autism awareness to encouraging friends and collaborators to become partners in movement toward acceptance and appreciation". The rate could be stabilizing already but more data will be required to confirm it.

The condition is often impossible to diagnose and identify during the early months of a child's life, with common symptoms including inability to hold eye contact, little to no social response, impaired interaction skills and the appearance of being "shut out" from the real world. "The sooner the child starts receiving services, the sooner the child will reach his or her full potential". A previous report published in 2014 (That covered years from 2010 to 2012) reads the same number.

In its effort to develop better methods for identifying autism and estimating prevalence, Autism Speaks has funded studies using active surveillance methods that go beyond parent reports and record reviews.

New Jersey has seen a surge of 12% in new autism cases over a period of two years, federal health officials said on Thursday.

But, he added, "the rate remains alarmingly high".

The ACNS, which is the only organization in Nepal that works for autistic children, is run by parents of children with autism.
